Song of the Week: Shout Out Louds – Blue Ice

“It hurts when I breathe, it hurts when I speak,” Adam Olenius murmurs on the Shout Out Louds’ unexpectedly lovely lead single for their upcoming album, Optica. The Swedish band’s singles tend to be more upbeat, joyous affairs, a trend that the other single from the album, “Walking In Your Footsteps,” fits to a tee. But the gently melancholy “Blue Ice” is decidedly low-key, its muted guitar and elegiac strings elegantly filling in the space behind Olenius’s subdued vocal and an effortlessly pretty piano hook. Most of the buzz surrounding the song seems to be related to its release as a 7-inch single actually made out of ice, but don’t get distracted. This song will be in your head long after the ice has melted.
